Dr Korczak's Example 20 NOV 2009 Reading/discussion Space Upstairs By David Greig Presented by HATCH Theatre Company Admission free A play reading to mark 20 years since the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, followed by a discussion with the Children's Rights Alliance, chaired by young people. Based on real life events, the play is set in the final days of a children’s orphanage in the Warsaw ghetto. Using actors and dolls to represent both the children and the soldiers, a powerful and emotional world emerges, where Dr Korczak’s thinking is radically challenged by a young boy, Adzio. Dr Korczak is a much adored children’s writer in Eastern Europe and was in the 1930’s a radical theorist on children’s rights. He put these strong ideas into practice in the orphanages he ran in Warsaw. Today some of these ideas are central to our thinking about children. This event is free and open to people of all ages.
