AGAMEMNON 16 - 31 MAR 2012 Theatre Cube By Classic Stage Ireland Tickets €20/16/14/12 AGAMEMNON CSI continue their exploration of Ancient Greek Drama with Agamemnon, the first and only surviving trilogy of Greek tragedies, The Oresteia by Aeschylus In Iphigenia in Aulis (CSI - June 2011) Clytemnestra, swore vengeance on her husband, Agamemnon for sacrificing their daughter, Iphigenia - all so that his ships could sail to conquer Troy. When Agamemnon returns in triumph Clytemnestra appears to have forgotten her vow of vengeance and greets him with shows of overwhelming joy. But her true intent is yet to be revealed; when she invites her husband to enter the palace on a river of bloodred cloth a great foreboding fills the hearts of the city elders. The curse on the royal house of Argos is not yet broken... The Oresteia is the only fully intact Ancient Greek trilogy to survive and is widely considered to be one of the greatest achievements of Western culture. Following its presentation of Agamemnon, CSI will complete the trilogy later this year with a staging of the two concluding parts, to mark the first professional presentation of trilogy for the Irish stage. Once again CSI has assembled a large and exceptionally talented company for this production including CSI favourites, Lesa Thurman and Michael Bates as Clytemnestra and Agamemnon respectively – a continuation of their portrayal of the characters from the company’s 2011 production of Iphigenia in Aulis. The Oresteia trilogy consists of Agamemnon, Libation Bearers and Eumenides. It is the seminal text of Greek theatre becoming a classic soon after its first performance in 458 B.C. “A production by Classic Stage Ireland is always worth waiting for” The Irish Times |
